How to Know If Your Child Has a Stress Fracture

When the bones in the foot endure small cracks from excessive pressure, it’s referred to as a stress fracture. This generally results from activities that involve running or jumping, causing the bones to have small tears, often resulting in pain and discomfort. Typically, this is a condition which often affects athletes, both young and old. People with nutritional deficiencies may also suffer from stress fractures because their bones may be weaker. Additional causes of this condition may include wearing shoes that fit poorly or are worn out. If you have this type of fracture, some of the symptoms experienced may be pain in the affected area that continues after resting, as well as swelling. A consultation with a podiatrist is advised for a proper diagnosis; this may include an X-ray or MRI being performed to see the extent of the fracture.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact Dr. LeKeisha George from Forest Hills Podiatric Medical Care. Dr. George can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

The Stress Fractures occur on the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  Then the feet and ankles lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection the bones receive the full impact of each step. The stress on the feet causes cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • runners
  • people affected with Osteoporosis
  • play tennis or basketball
  • gymnastics
  • high impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures, and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves in high impact will aggravate pain.
